Albania is one of the best countries in the Balkans for a road trip because a few hours of driving can move you between coast, high mountains, wild rivers, UNESCO lake landscapes and quiet agricultural valleys.
The best scenic drives are not necessarily the longest routes. I prefer roads where the landscape changes clearly, there are meaningful stops outside the car, and the day can be slowed down without destroying the itinerary. The nine routes below cover the Riviera, Albanian Alps, Lake Ohrid, the Vjosa, Skrapar, Lake Shkodra and the mountain villages around Korçë.

1. Llogara Pass and the Albanian Riviera
This is the most dramatic coast-to-mountain transition in the country. The 2024 opening of the Llogara Tunnel changed through-traffic, so scenic travelers should consciously choose between the fast tunnel and the older pass road when the latter is open and appropriate. The reward is forest, high viewpoints and the sudden drop toward Palasë and Dhërmi.

2. Shkodër to Kelmend and Vermosh
For alpine scenery without a major trek, drive north from Shkodër through Koplik and Tamarë toward Selcë, Lëpushë and Vermosh. The route works best with an overnight because the villages are destinations, not merely roadside stops.

Lake Ohrid gives you a gentler road-trip day: UNESCO scenery, the peninsula village of Lin and the higher approach toward the North Macedonia border. It is one of the easiest scenic drives to combine with a relaxed lunch and short walks.

The Vjosa road is about a living river system rather than a single viewpoint. Këlcyrë Gorge provides the most dramatic section, while Përmet is the ideal slow-travel finish. Protect the river by using established stops rather than driving onto gravel bars or informal tracks.

How I choose the right scenic drive
Choose Llogara for the most dramatic sea-and-mountain combination; Kelmend for alpine villages; Lake Ohrid for easy lake scenery; Vjosa for wild-river landscapes; Leskovik for a quiet mountain transfer; Osum for canyon geology; Lake Shkodra for an easy half day; Butrint for archaeology plus wetlands; and Dardhë for southeastern mountain country.
The road should fit the rest of the itinerary. A traveler continuing from Vlorë to Himarë naturally benefits from Llogara, while someone moving between Përmet and Korçë should use the Leskovik route. Do not drive across the country just to collect a scenic road that does not fit your direction.
Driving basics before you start
A scenic drive is not the same thing as the fastest route. I plan these days with generous margins, because the point is to stop at viewpoints, walk through a village, have coffee, photograph the landscape and change the plan if weather or traffic make one section less appealing. If a navigation app suggests a shortcut that leaves the main road, I compare it with recent satellite imagery or local advice before following it.
Fuel planning is simple on the main corridors but becomes more important in mountain districts. I start rural driving days with more than half a tank, carry water and a basic snack, and avoid depending on one small filling station remaining open late. The same logic applies to cash: cards are increasingly common, but small cafés, parking areas and village businesses may still be easier with lek notes.
For rental cars, the contract matters more than the vehicle badge. Check whether unpaved roads are excluded, what the tyre and windscreen policy covers, and whether cross-border driving requires written permission. Do not choose a rough detour simply because the car has high ground clearance. Insurance exclusions can turn a minor road mistake into an expensive problem.

Do not use navigation apps as a road-quality guarantee
A route line only proves that software has connected two points. It does not guarantee that a shortcut is paved, appropriate for your rental agreement, open after storms or comfortable for a nervous driver. When the scenic value depends on a minor mountain road, ask your guesthouse or a local driver the same day.
This matters especially in Kelmend, Skrapar and high southeastern villages. Staying on the main corridor may add minutes but remove uncertainty. Albania rewards flexibility far more than aggressive shortcutting.
Best months for scenic driving
May, June, September and early October are the easiest all-round months: long daylight, lower heat than midsummer and fewer coastal bottlenecks. July and August are excellent for combining drives with swimming but require earlier starts and more parking patience.
Winter makes Korçë, Dardhë and mountain landscapes beautiful, but snow and ice demand current road information. Spring makes the Vjosa and Osum especially powerful, which also means more caution close to water.
How many hours should you drive in one day?
I build Albania scenic days around four to six hours of total movement including stops, not four to six hours of uninterrupted driving. When a map shows three hours each way, I usually make it an overnight route. Mountain concentration and summer traffic make long days more tiring than the kilometer count suggests.
Families and scenic road trips
With children, prioritize routes with easy food and toilet stops: Lake Ohrid, Lake Shkodra and Dardhë are especially manageable. Kelmend and the longer mountain transfers are better with an overnight. Motion sickness is the practical issue that deserves planning before any pass road.
Campervans and motorcycles
Campervans need more conservative parking and turning space, while motorcycles need more protection from wind, gravel and sudden weather. Neither vehicle type should use a minor road simply because another traveler posted that they once managed it.
Official sources and live checks
I use Albania’s National Tourism Agency for destination context and the Ministry of Infrastructure or Albanian Road Authority for major road projects. These sources explain places and infrastructure, but they cannot replace same-day checks for weather, temporary works, crashes or local closures.
Where to stay on a road-trip itinerary
The easiest way to keep scenic drives enjoyable is to sleep at both ends of the longer routes. Vlorë–Dhërmi, Shkodër–Kelmend and Përmet–Korçë all become better when you remove the pressure to return to the starting city.

Tours and activities
If nobody wants to drive, a private driver can turn a scenic road into a relaxed day. For routes where the main experience is rafting, archaeology or a protected site, a guided activity can be more useful than driving every kilometer yourself.

The best way to experience that variety is not to drive faster. Choose fewer roads, stop more deliberately and leave enough space in the itinerary for Albania’s landscapes to surprise you.
